About a dozen balloons launch before sunrise each morning for the Dawn Patrol. These pilots must have training in flying in the February 2023 dark and their balloons must carry marker lights. They will fly until after the sun comes up so they can see the ground when landing. Balloon Fiesta Park becomes the busiest airport in the world each March 2023 morning with about 600 launches in less than 2 hours. These close quarters make for a lot of “kissing” or fabric to fabric contact. In order to launch 600 balloons from an 80 acre field in 90 minutes, balloons launch in waves and sequence.
